Fourier transform is an essential ingredient in Shor’s factoring algorithm. In the standard quantum circuit model with the gate set U 2 , controlled-NOT , the discrete Fourier transforms FN= ij N N, i , j=0,1 ,... ,N −1, =e2 i/N, can be realized exactly by quantum circuits of size O n2 , n=ln N, and so can the discrete sine or cosine transforms. In topological quantum computing, the simplest universal topological quantum computer is based on the Fibonacci 2+1 -topological quantum field theory TQFT , where the standard quantum circuits are replaced by unitary transformations realized by braiding conformal blocks. We report here that the large Fourier transforms FN and the discrete sine or cosine transforms can never be realized exactly by braiding conformal blocks for a fixed TQFT. It follows that an approximation is unavoidable in the implementation of Fourier transforms by braiding conformal blocks.

Quantum groups and nonabelian braiding in quantum Hall systems
Wave functions describing quasiholes and electrons in nonabelian quantum Hall states are well known to correspond to conformal blocks of certain coset conformal field theories. In this paper we explicitly analyse the algebraic structure underlying the braiding properties of these conformal blocks. We treat the electrons and the quasihole excitations as localised particles carrying charges relat...
متن کاملQuantum Fourier transforms for extracting hidden linear structures in finite fields ∗
We propose a definition for quantum Fourier transforms in settings where the algebraic structure is that of a finite field, and show that they can be performed efficiently by a quantum computer. Using these finite field quantum Fourier transforms, we obtain the strongest separation between quantum and classical query complexity known to date—specifically, we define a problem that requires Ω(2) ...
متن کاملConformal blocks for AdS 5 singletons
We give a simple derivation of the conformal blocks of the singleton sector of compactifications of IIB string theory on spacetimes of the form X5×Y5 with Y5 compact, while X5 has as conformal boundary an arbitrary 4-manifold M4. We retain the second-derivative terms in the action for the B,C fields and thus the analysis is not purely topological. The unit-normalized conformal blocks agree exac...
متن کاملOn mirror symmetry in three dimensional abelian gauge theories
We present an identity relating the partition function of N = 4 supersymmetric QED to that of its dual under mirror symmetry. The identity is a generalized Fourier transform. Many known properties of abelian theories can be derived from this formula, including the mirror transforms for more general gauge and matter content. We show that N = 3 Chern-Simons QED and N = 4 QED with BF-type coupling...
متن کاملExact quantum Fourier transforms and discrete logarithm algorithms
We show how the quantum fast Fourier transform (QFFT) can be made exact for arbitrary orders (first for large primes). For most quantum algorithms only the quantum Fourier transform of order 2n is needed, and this can be done exactly. Kitaev [9] showed how to approximate the Fourier transform for any order. Here we show how his construction can be made exact by using the technique known as “amp...
